Crossfire Premier G93 - Flory (FINALIST)
|
Final match - Day 6 - Flory loses heartbreaker in final! Crossfire G93 Flory came up short against the San Juan Spirits 94 Blue (CN) in the championship match today 1-0. Hopefully we’ll have a game summary posted soon. Congratulations Crossfire G93 Flory on an outstanding showing!
Sunday, June 22nd. Sunny, 84 degrees, 15-20 mph tradewind blowing across the sloping grass field.
This is a story of the Last Washington Team Standing: Crossfire is down to 12 un-injured players, but this is the Region IV Championship Final, so all are ready to play.
The Story begins with San Juan, moving downslope, pressuring Crossfire the first half, but the defense held, preventing serious threats. In the 13th and 14th minutes, Crossfire broke through for shots on the San Juan goal. Crossfire was called for infractions resulting in free kicks eight times in this game. All the calls had an impact on the energy of play. In the 16th minute, an errant bounce led to an inadvertent “arm ball”, which produced a call and yet another free kick. This one, as it turned out by the end of the game, would be very important. At that time, San Juan took a free kick from 45 yards out. With the slope and wind advantage, they put the shot into the box. After a spirited four second scuffle, a San Juan player gained control of the ball, wheeled and fired a shot into the right side of the Crossfire net. The San Juan Fans roared, and their team celebrated. Crossfire, as they have in the past, remained poised, and composed. As the first half continued, however, and Crossfire’s attacks were being deflected, the team’s mood appeared to be less determined, but at the same time, San Juan was also unable to mount serious threats the remainder of the first half. Crossfire would need some kind of boost to head into the second half. Many of the Crossfire fans moved down to the sidelines as the second half opened. The volume of support picked up markedly, as the girls put up a determined program of attack. Throughout the second half, now with the slope advantage, Crossfire continually threatened to score. Then, in the 40 minute, Crossfire put their left forward in goal, freeing up the goalie, who in the normal season was our center forward, to step up our offense. There was an immediate injection of energy, and a sense of purpose, which caught fire on the sidelines as well. Crossfire mounted attack after attack, threatening several times. In the 51st minute, a beautiful center mid pass found the right forward wide open and breaking on the San Juan net. As the San Juan keeper came out to challenge, she fired a hard shot from just outside the right outer corner of the box. It hit the Crossbar.
Crossfire continued to hammer any openings to attack the goal. One counter attack by San Juan, in particular, tested our substitute goalie, but the shot rebounded off the crossbar. Crossfire counter-attacked off of this miss, and once again came very close to bringing the score level. The clock continued to work against us, however, and unfortunately, this was not to be Crossfires day.
These girls played hard! During the battle (and a battle is what this game was), the injured players stepped in to provide some relief, so our hats off to all the girls. It was a fight to the finish, and they never gave up. Instead, they picked up the fight as full time approached. They were the last Washington Team Standing, and they dug deep to hold the line. In the end, they did not win, but we believe they were still victorious.
Our compliments to our opponents. Crossfire wishes San Juan the best at the National Tournament, and hopes they bring home a championship for Region IV.
Final Score: San Juan Spirits 94 Blue 1, Crossfire Premier G93 Flory 0 Box Score: Crossfire: 12 shots, 6 on frame, 1 corner kicks, 5 free kicks San Juan: 10 shots, 2 on frame, 4 corner kicks, 8 free kicks
Semi-Final match - Day 5 - Flory going to the Finals! Crossfire G93 Flory has defeated the FC Slammers to advance to the finals. The final score was 2-1. Crossfire will play the San Juan Spirits 94 Blue (CN) in the championship match on Sunday at 2:30 PM PST. Good luck Crossfire on Sunday!
Level grass field, sunny with a strong sun, temperature 80 degrees, and a 10-20 mph tradewind blowing across the field.
The first half began with the Slammers patiently probing the Crossfire defense, trying to feed the ball up to their big forwards. Several corners by them were well defended.
In the 18th minute, the Slammers finally got the shot they were looking for as their right forward put a cross into the mid box where a strong header directed it on a path for just under the crossbar in what looked like a certain goal. But the Crossfire keeper lept and made an incredible fingertip save, grasping the ball with her fingertips, like a snowcone, just in front of the crossbar. The beautiful thing about this Goalie’s performance, is that anything she has vision on, she seems to be able to keep out of the goal.
Crossfire quickly rebounded, and in the 21st minute the right forward lofted a long, high arching slot on net. As it came down just in front of the crossbar, waffling in the teeth of the tradewind, the Slammers keeper was unable to maintain control of it. The left Crossfire forward, her defender and the keeper collided in a melee for it, and the Crossfire player hammered it into the net.
The game was then wide open, with the teams mounting alternating attacks. However, for some reason, the Slammers appeared to be content with Crossfire setting the tempo for the game. This served Crossfire well, as they paced themselves, deflected attacks, and mounted coordinated attacks of their own. In the 33rd minute, the right forward broke free on the right side at about the 35 yard line. As she drove in, the Barcelona keeper came out to block her advance. With that, our left forward broke up the center. A deft pass by the right forward to her trapped the Slammers keeper far out in the box, as left forward caught the pass in full stride and hit the center net with her shot.
The Slammers attacked relentlessly, as crossfire maintained a composed response to all attacks. Finally, however, in the second half, they scored in the 42nd minute on a corner shot to the mid box, which they headed in perfectly.
The Slammers truly turned up the wick on forward movement, with an growing roar of support from their fans. At one point, they even moved their whole team up, including the goalie. In the 54th minute a hard shot from the right top of the box was blocked by the Crossfire keeper (who continued to be outstanding), who smothered the rebound. Some gutsy play by injured and exhausted players helped stave off the Slammers attack and preserve the win. This was a well deserved, TEAM win, and we couldn’t be prouder of these girls. Go Crossfire!
Final score: Crossfire 2, Slammers 1
Box score: Crossfire: 6 shots, 3 on frame Slammers: 6 shots, 6 on frame

Quarter-Final match - Day 4 - Flory advances to Semi-Finals! Crossfire G93 Flory defeats FC Barcelona (CS) 2-0 to win their quarter-final match and advance to the semi-finals. Crossfire will play the FC Slammers (CS) on Saturday at 1:00 PM PST, with the winner advancing to the final on Sunday. Great job Crossfire Flory!
Sunny, temperature 84, a steady, strong tradewind of 15-20 mph blowing across the field.
Barcelona came out strong, getting a shot on goal in the first minute. Crossfire quickly responded with a drive down the right side in the second minute. A pass up the right side was deflected out of bounds, but then the right mid-fielder sprinted to the sideline for a rapid throw-in to the right forward as she ran up the sideline. She worked her way free and fired a shot into the box. Barcelona’s keeper intercepted the shot, but fumbled it onto the ground in front of her. The left forward, following the shot in from the left, was there to punish Barecelona and hammered a shot into the net with her right foot for the first score of the game, stunning the opposition.
Recovering quickly, Barcelona used excellent teamwork to continually pressure Crossfire the remainder of the half, taking six shots on goal, four corners and two free kicks. Still, the Crossfire defense held. Their most serious threat occurred in the 33rd minute as the right forward for Barcelona drove into the box and put a hard high shot on net. The Crossfire keeper, continuing her outstanding tournament play, deflected the ball upwards, where it hit the crossbar, bounced over and rolled harmlessly out of play.
Reinvigorated, Crossfire started out the second half fast. In the 42nd minute, breaking out from their own end, fed a pass up to the streaking left forward. Seeing the Barcelona keeper far out of the net, she drove an accurate, arcing left footed shot over the keepers outstretched hands and into the net.
Continuing this tempo, on the next offensive drive forward, the ball is slotted through to the left forward again, and in a burst of energy she cuts across the 18 yard box at an angle, and hammers home an apparent hat trick for the third score……….but wait, it’s called back on as offsides! Score remains Crossfire 2, Barcelona 0!
The remainder of the game see sawed back and forth, but Barcelona was unable to break through. Final score: Crossfire 2, Barcelona 0 Box score: Crossfire: 9 shots, 5 on frame Barcelona: 12 shots, 9 on frame
Up next: FC Slammers

Preliminary Round match - Day 3 - Flory advances to Quarter-Finals! Crossfire G93 Flory gets must-win, defeating the Colorado Rush Nike (CO) 1-0, and makes it 5 for 5 Crossfire teams going to the quarter-finals. Crossfire finishes in 2nd place in Flight A and will meet FC Barcelona (CS) in the quarter-finals on Friday.
1st half: Colorado started out with the excellent ball control and passing that they have shown throughout this tournament. A free kick went high at four minutes, followed by a shot on goal at eight minutes. Crossfire responded good shots in the sixth and eigth minute. Colorado’s excellent left forward made a drive and shot in the 22nd minute, ending in a another great save by the Crossfire keeper. In the 25th minute Crossfire finally broke through with a nice right to left cross by our center Mid-Fielder, into the box which was spearheaded with a near diving header, back into the right corner of the net by our center forward. Crossfire 1-0. The second half was wide open, with surges by both teams. Crossfire dominated the early minutes. A hard shot hit the crossbar in the 37th minute. Colorado, playing with pride, determination and great ball control, got off 10 shots in the remaining 25 minutes, with 6 on goal and one hitting both the crossbar, and the side bar, at the same time in the 74th minute. Crossfire held on, valiantly pushing the ball back upfield repeatedly in the 88 degree heat. And it was well that they did, since Colorado did not let up, in any discernable way, until the last few minutes on the clock. Even then, they were still threatening. Our hats off to Colorado! In a nice show of sportsmanship, Colorado gave each Crossfire player a gift at the end of the game.
Final score: Crossfire 1, Colorado 0. Box score: Crossfire: 12 shots, 5 on frame Colorado: 16 shots, 10 on frame Next up: Quarterfinals on Friday: Crossfire vs FC Barcelona…………………………………GO CROSSFIRE!!. Preliminary Round match - Day 2 Crossfire G93 Flory gets another tie. This time against the San Juan Spirits 94 Blue (CN) 0-0. In 3rd place in Flight A, Crossfire must win tomorrow for any chance to advance to quarter-finals.
Temperature 84 degrees. Partly cloudy the first half with a 10-20 mph breeze. Brief tropical downpour in the second half, no breeze thereafter. First half: Crossfire dominates with six shots, three on goal. The game is closely and well refereed. In the course of applying significant pressure, Crossfire has five distant free kicks, one of which ended in a nice header deflection caught by the San Juan keeper. San Juan also has three free kicks, all well defended. 0-0 at half. Second half features a more wide open game by both teams. San Juan came out strong with the wind to their backs. Crossfire defended furiously. In a brief (warm!)tropical downpour over the first nine minutes, San Juan got off six shots and three free kicks, but came away with only two shots on goal, and no score. The downpour ended promplty thereafter, leaving the players and fans soaked. In other words, perfect Northwest soccer weather. Crossfire dominated the next ten minutes, getting off four shots, with one on goal. San Juan, exhorted on by their fans, tried to rally. The remainder of the game was wide open, with surges by both teams. Crossfire got off four more shots, two on goal in the last ten minutes, while San Juan fired off three shots. Crossfires keeper made a great chest block of one close San Juan shot, then scooped up the rebound to end San Juans threat. Final score 0-0. Crossfire plays Colorado in the final bracket game Crossfire needs a pure WIN, with goals scored, to move on out of the bracket. No room for error.
Preliminary Round match - Day 1 Crossfire G93 Flory ties San Diego Surf White (CS) 1-1.
Grass Field, temperature 82 degrees, wind blowing 15-25 mph down a sloping field. Crossfire starts going upfield and upwind the first half. The wind will be a major factor in the game.
From the moment the whistle blows, the play immediately drifts toward Crossfire’s defense, as the wind makes all loose balls move toward our goal. Then, in the 5 minute – Surf’s right forward takes the ball out wide to their right, then begins to drive to their left, toward the goal. After moving about 10 or 15 feet toward the goal, she lofts a left footer up, and apparently over, the goal, wide of the left post….but then the ball slows, curves, and dips just inside that far left post, right under the crossbar for a goal. Crossfire 0, Surf 1.
Surf continues to press their wind advantage, and lead in shots on goal, but is not breaking through. Surf’s goalie also appears to be taking her time for each goal kick, and punt. The Halftime whistle blows. Surf was unable to further capitalize on their wind advantage, and Crossfire will go into the second half with an opportunity to even the score with their own wind advantage.
2nd half begins with an aggressive long ball by Crossfire. The second half appears to be an entirely different game, as Crossfire pours on the pressure, and dominates play. Finally, in the 54th minute - following massive offensive pressure from Crossfire - there is a shot attempt, and Surf gets a handball in the box. Crossfire’s Captain steps up for the penalty shot and delivers it hard to the left side. Surf keeper guesses correctly, dives to her right, gets both hands on the ball, but the shot blows through her deflection and into the net. Surf 1, Crossfire 1!
As the game nears it end, Surf picks up the pace, and the pressure, but does not break through. Crossfire’s goalie, who has been on fire the entire game, continues to be tested, and comes through for the team. The game ends in a tie, as Crossfire matches the number one team in the nation, where they had clear opportunities to take the game. The girls will need this kind of fire, and more, if they hope to prevail in the next two bracket games.

Crossfire took the lead early on a good through ball that split the defense and left our forward one on one with goalie. For the rest of the half New Mexico fought very hard and managed to finish a bouncing ball two feet in front of the net to end the half all tied up 1-1. The second half was very hard fought with Crossfire generating more opportunities, and finally scoring off a corner with five minutes to go.
Preliminary Round match - Day 1 Crossfire G94 Lombard defeats FC Willamette Possession (OR) 5-0.
Very hot and sunny. Game pretty even for first ten or fifteen minutes, then x-fire scores on a good through ball. For the next ten or fifteen minutes Oregon has the better play and almost scores on a header. With ten seconds left in the half Crossfire scores on a 25 yard shot over the goalie’s head. In the second half it looks like Crossfire’s strong conditioning took over and the game ends with Crossfire winning 5-0.
