What are the Nike Friendlies?
Isabel sat down to answer some questions about herself, soccer, and this exciting achievement; being named to the U14 Women’s National Team.
-----------------------------------------------
[Crossfire] What would you say to other young girls who dream about making the national team?
[Isabel] To do extra in practice and outside practice. If you work your hardest you can reach your goals.
[Crossfire] How does it feel being selected to the U14 National Team?
[Isabel] It makes me feel inspired to keep working so I can keep making the national team each year.
[Crossfire] What was it like playing with the best young players in the United States?
[Isabel] It was really great, because I was able to learn what I needed to work on, and the competition helped me to raise my game a lot.
[Crossfire] What was your favorite memory from the national camps?
[Isabel] Wearing the national team jersey.

[Crossfire] On a more personal note, what is one thing you like to eat before a game? [Isabel] I like to drink White Chocolate Mochas from Starbucks, and I like to eat a lot of pasta.
[Crossfire] What person has inspired you the most to become the player you are today? [Isabel] My step-dad Andy Schmetzer, because he has played pro before and he’s been my trainer since I was 10 years old. He has taught me so much!
[Crossfire] Who is your favorite soccer player? [Isabel] Abby Wambach because she always works hard, and even though she it got injured before the Olympics, she still wants to become a better player than she already is.
[Crossfire] What is your proudest moment in your soccer career? [Isabel] Tying the National Champion Dallas Sting in the Red Bull League in 2007.
[Crossfire] If you could have one superhero power, what would it be? [Isabel] Mindreading because I could read other players’ minds.
[Crossfire] If you could reverse one mistake in your career, what would it be? [Isabel] Missing my penalty kick in the finals of the Manchester United Cup this year.
[Crossfire] What are your life’s ambitions outside of soccer? [Isabel] I want to get good grades throughout high school so I can go to UC Santa Barbara.
[Crossfire] What is your favorite professional soccer team? [Isabel] Manchester United.
[Crossfire] Who is your favorite singer? [Isabel] My favorite singer is Avril Lavigne.
[Crossfire] Is there anyone you’d like to thank for helping you achieve this tremendous accomplishment? [Isabel] My mommy, Andy Schmetzer, and my dad Scott Farrell. I’d also like to mention my chiropractor, Christian Cho, who really helped me through some serious back problems. Oh, and my brother Ryan and sister Jaimee for supporting me.
[Crossfire] Ok, here is a serious question. Has it been difficult changing teams and focusing so much attention on your own soccer career? [Isabel] It’s been difficult because I’ve formed so many friendships, but missed so many important team events. But I appreciate so much how my family, friends and Crossfire teammates have supported me while I’ve worked to reach my goals. I know that without their help I wouldn’t be where I am today.
[Crossfire] Good luck in your first tournament with the National Team at the Women’s Nike Friendlies.
